How to simply design a board game? This list will provide an introduction.

1. Conceptualization and idea development

The first step in creating a board game is to conceptualize the idea. This phase involves brainstorming the theme, mechanics, and goals of the game. Here are some things to consider during this phase.

1.1 Determine the theme

What is the game about? The theme can be fantasy, history, sci-fi, strategy, or anything else that inspires you. A compelling theme often drives the player’s experience and interest in the game.

1.2 Define the audience

Who is your game for? Are you designing for children, families, or hardcore board game enthusiasts? Knowing your target audience will influence your design choices, such as complexity, length, and game content.

1.3 Determine the game mechanics

How will the game work? Think about whether it will be a competitive or cooperative game. How will players interact with the game components? And what types of challenges will they face. Mechanics include movement, resource management, combat, etc.

2. Design Gameplay and Rules

How to simply design a board game?Once you have the core concept, it’s time to develop the game mechanics and rules. In this phase, you’ll fine-tune how the game works and what players need to do to win.

2.1 Define the Game Flow

How will players take turns? What actions can they perform? Design the game sequence and what happens in each turn.

2.2 Determine Game Components

Determine the necessary game pieces. Such as cards, dice, tokens, boards, and other components. You need to decide on the size, material, and appearance of these elements.

2.3 Ensure the Rules are Clear

Write clear, concise, and easy to understand rules.

Effective component design not only simplifies the manufacturing process, but also improves the quality of the game. This article explores how to effectively design board games through the use of game components.

1. Component Standardization

How to effectively design board games? Modular design is an important strategy for improving the efficiency of board game design. By creating modular board game components that can be reused in different games, developers can streamline production and reduce costs. For example, standard-sized cards, dice, and tokens can be designed to fit multiple game types. This makes it easier to adapt and expand.
Designing custom board game components that are interchangeable or customizable can further improve efficiency. This approach allows for greater flexibility and can accommodate a variety of game variations or expansions without the need for new molds or designs.

2. Optimizing visual design

2.1 Consistent aesthetics

Developing a visual theme that is consistent with the game mechanics and narrative helps create a cohesive player experience. A consistent aesthetic reduces the need for redesign and ensures that all visual elements work together harmoniously.

2.2 Minimalist design

Taking a minimalist approach can simplify the design process and reduce the amount of artwork and components required. Minimalist design focuses on basic elements and eliminates unnecessary details to create a clean and practical look.

2.3 Effective use of colors and icons

Color coding and icons can effectively convey information quickly and clearly, improving the usability of game components. This reduces the need for extensive rule explanations and helps players quickly grasp the mechanics of the game.

Designing a game board is a creative and challenging task. Many board gamers want to design their own game board. Here are some suggestions of how to make a game board to help you:

1.Clarify the design goals

Target audience: How to make a game board, determine the design goals first. Determine whether your game board is for children, teenagers or adults. Different audiences may have different preferences for the difficulty, theme and gameplay of the game.

Purpose of the game: Clarify the core purpose of the game, such as cultivating thinking skills, teamwork, strategic planning, etc. This will help you stay directional during the design process.

2.Design chessboard and chess pieces

Chessboard layout: The design of the game board should be simple and easy to understand. You can consider using different grid shapes such as squares, rectangles or hexagons, as well as different numbers of rows and columns to create a unique layout. At the same time, the color and pattern of the chessboard should also echo the theme of the game.

Chess piece design: The shape, color and number of chess pieces should be designed according to the needs of the game. Make sure that the chess pieces are easy to identify and operate, while also having a certain aesthetic. You can consider using different materials (such as wood, plastic or metal) to make chess pieces to increase the texture of the game.

3.Formulate game rules

Basic rules: Formulate clear and concise game rules to ensure that players can quickly understand and get started. The rules should include how the pieces move, the rules for capturing pieces, the conditions for winning, etc.

Strategy and skills: Design some strategic elements so that players can use wisdom and skills to gain an advantage during the game. This can increase the depth and challenge of the game.

Balance: Ensure that the game is balanced between the two players to avoid situations where one side is too strong or too weak. You can ensure the balance of the game by testing and adjusting the rules.

4.Pay attention to the educational significance of the game

Thinking training: Design some game elements that can exercise players’ thinking ability, logical thinking and strategic planning. For example, you can set up some situations that require players to make logical inferences or predictions.

Cultural inheritance: If possible, incorporate traditional cultural elements into the game, such as Chinese chess, Go, etc. This not only increases the fun of the game, but also allows players to understand and learn traditional culture while playing the game.

Teamwork: Consider designing some game modes that require teamwork, so that players can cultivate team spirit and communication skills in mutual cooperation.

5.Consider the scalability and fun of the game

Scalability: Design some scalable game elements, such as adding new chess pieces, new rules or new game modes. This can keep players interested and enthusiastic about the game for a long time.

Fun: Add some fun elements, such as random events, special skills or rewards. These elements can make the game more interesting and attractive.

6.Conduct testing and feedback

Testing: After the game design is completed, conduct multiple tests to ensure the stability and balance of the game. You can invite players of different ages and backgrounds to participate in the test and collect their feedback.

Feedback: Improve and optimize the game based on player feedback. This can include adjusting rules, improving the design of the board and pieces, and adding new game elements.

Summary

Many game designers would face a problem that how to make the board game box the correct size. VartGames would like to provide some advice on it basing on a common telescope game box.

The main purpose of the box is packaging, so the box should pack all game components.

First, we need to know the inner size of the box. The length and width are determined by the max size one. For example, there is a 1/6 fold board in the game. The folded size is 210*280mm, so the inner size of the box must be over this size, we usually make it 2mm bigger. The depth of the board will be determined by components. If there is a plastic inlay/tray in the game, it is much simple, plastic inlay usually pack cards, plastic, wooden components, the paper part like notepad, punch-board, game board, rule-book will be put on the top, the total thickness is the depth of the box. If there is a paper inlay in the box, we usually make 1 or 2 pits for irregular components, then the paper parts on the top. The thickness of pit and paper parts are the depth of the box

Second, we calculate the board game box outside size. We usually use 1.5mm and 2mm thickness boards for the game box. For the 1.5mm thickness box, the outside size is inner size plus 8mm. For the 2mm thickness box, the outside size is inner size plus 10mm.

At last, please remember we need 15-20mm wrapping part on four edges on lid and bottom box.

VartGames provides free die-cut lines service, if you are still not sure about the size, feel free to contact us.

One of our clients designed a card game named identify card, some cards have full black round the margin, some cards are with white margin. He doesn’t want the players to find different cards. Does it make sense?

The truth is the margin color can be seen from the side edge, please see the image below:

We can see the bottom dark part is the black margin cards, the top white part is the white margin cards.

If you don’t want players to find different cards, remember to make the same margin. Where is the margin, see the image, the margin distance is 3.5-4mm.

We met an interesting question that the client was asking if he had to shrink-wrap his games. We know some of games don’t have shrink-wrap outside instead of using stickers.

Some people worry the use of plastic to pollute the environment. Comparing to other plastic board game package, these thin film does is not a big deal. The current plastic film we used is called POF (Polyolefin Shrink Film). This is a kind of environment-friendly material, its non-toxic. Which has a wide range applications and also meet to standard of FDA, can be used for food packaging.

As a board game manufacturer, we highly suggest to do shrink wrapping board game package.

Firstly, the plastic film protect the box surface from dust and scratches, especially the rub in cartons during delivery. Second, it helps to keep the paper components keep tidy and neat, as this film can prevent water and humidity getting inside. The humidity would make board change shape. Thirdly: It means really new sets when retails put them on the shelves, consumers of course would like to buy a new one and enjoy the ceremony of opening!
